KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jamaica College says it is treating as “urgent and serious” a disturbing incident captured in a viral video involving its students, as police have since taken one of the boys into custody.

In a statement signed by Principal Wayne Robinson, the school confirmed it became aware of the video on Saturday, April 18, and immediately launched an investigation.

“Jamaica College is aware of a video which has depicted some of our students in a disturbing incident. We immediately began investigating on Saturday, April 18 when it was brought to our attention. We are treating this as an urgent and serious matter,” the statement, obtained by Observer Online Monday afternoon, said.

Sources had earlier confirmed that one of the students seen in the video violently boxing a peer was taken into police custody. A second student, who reportedly used a belt to beat the same schoolmate, is now facing expulsion.
