Ghanaian footballer killed following armed attack on team bus

Ghanaian footballer Dominic Frimpong has been killed after suspected armed robbers opened fire at the bus carrying his team, Berekum Chelsea, back from a weekend game.

It is truly a day of sorrow for the West African nation, and the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has expressed its “profound shock and deep sorrow”, and shared its “heartfelt condolences” to the 20-year-old’s family, teammates and all who work for the team in a statement.

“Dominic  was a promising young talent whose dedication and passion for the game embodied the spirit of our league,” the nation’s football association added.

According to Frimpong’s team, Berekum Chelsea, the club’s bus was returning from a Ghana Premier League fixture on Sunday, when they came under attack by “masked men wielding guns and assault rifles”.

They were on the road after an away fixture against Samartex in Samreboi and were ambushed by the men who “blocked the road to prevent” their passage, the club added.

“The  men started shooting at our bus as the driver tried to reverse,” it said. “The players and staff fled into nearby bushes to take cover.”

For now, the suspects have yet to be caught as investigations into the incident continue, yet authorities in the nation launched a manhunt in search for the perpetrators on Monday morning.

“We urge that all necessary measures be taken to ensure justice is served,” the GFA said, adding it is in contact with relevant authorities and the club.

It also revealed that it will be reviewing and strengthening security arrangements for clubs travelling for competitions within Ghana to “prevent such tragic occurrences in the future”.

As a Ghanaian footballer, Dominic Frimpong joined Berekum Chelsea on loan from Aduana FC in January this year, but his family is utterly gutted, according to local reports, after learning he was killed on Sunday.

Frimpong was expected to stay at Berekum Chelsea until the end of the league campaign.

In 13 appearances for the club, he netted two goals and looked a promising footballer.
