Nigeria’s Afrobeat sensation Patoranking brought pure fire to the opening day of Africa Oyé 2026, delivering a headline performance that sealed the first day of the festival with unforgettable energy.

Stepping onto the Sefton Park stage at 8:20pm, the Abule megastar appeared calm, focused, and fully in command. Dressed in a black armless denim top paired with matching jeans, Patoranking opened with a smooth, melodic flow from one of his signature sing‑along hits, instantly pulling the crowd into his orbit.

He soon shifted gears into the fan‑favourite “Suh Different”, sending the audience into a unified chorus that echoed across the park. Track after track built the momentum until he dropped the night’s most anticipated moment, “Abule”, prompting a full‑park eruption of dancing, singing, and pure joy. As the final act of Day One, Patoranking delivered exactly what a headliner should: mastery, charisma, and a setlist that kept the festival burning hot.

Other artists who lit up the first day of the 2026 Africa Oyé Festival included Senegal’s Oumy, Mozambique’s Ghorwane, Ghana’s King Ayisoba, and Congo‑Canadian artist Kizaba.

Oumy delivered a standout set, blending Wolof, English, and French rap with soulful vocals, all carried by the pulse of traditional Senegalese drumming fused into contemporary hip‑hop rhythms. Ghorwane followed with a warm, melodic afro‑jazz performance that wrapped the audience in smooth, reflective soundscapes. King Ayisoba transported festival‑goers with the raw authenticity of kologo music; a traditional West African lute (also known as xalam) with one to five strings, rooted in the musical traditions of the Western Sahara. Kizaba, the Congo‑Canadian powerhouse, brought explosive energy to the stage, matching the dynamic choreography of his dancers with equal intensity.

The festival opened with a colourful and spirited performance by Batala Mersey, an upbeat community drumming ensemble known for bringing the vibrant rhythms of Afro‑Brazilian samba to life.
