FIFA President Infantino sends heartfelt message to family of Ghanaian footballer shot dead

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has sent a message of support to the Ghanaian football community and the family of Dominic Frimpong, the player who was shot dead on Sunday during an armed attack on his team bus.

Frimpong was killed after suspected armed robbers opened fire at the bus carrying his team, Berekum Chelsea, back from a weekend game.

FIFA president Infantino has called this incident a tragedy and shared a statement, offering condolences to his family and loved ones, who have been left distraught after hearing the news.

“I am deeply saddened to hear the tragic passing of Berekum Chelsea Football Club’s Dominic Frimpong following a reported attack on the team while returning from a Ghana Premier League fixture”, he said.

“On behalf of the global football community and everyone at FIFA, we send our condolences to his family, friends and everyone at Berekum Chelsea who knew him”, he concluded.

On Monday morning, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) expressed its “profound shock and deep sorrow”, and shared its “heartfelt condolences” to the 20-year-old’s family, teammates and all who work for the team.

“Dominic was a promising young talent whose dedication and passion for the game embodied the spirit of our league,” the nation’s football association added.

According to Frimpong’s team, Berekum Chelsea, the club’s bus was returning from a Ghana Premier League fixture on Sunday, when they came under attack by “masked men wielding guns and assault rifles”.

They were on the road after an away fixture against Samartex in Samreboi and were ambushed by the men who “blocked the road to prevent” their passage, the club added.

“The  men started shooting at our bus as the driver tried to reverse,” it said. “The players and staff fled into nearby bushes to take cover.”

The suspects have yet to be caught as investigations into the incident continue,  but the Ghana Police launched a manhunt for the perpetrators on Monday morning.

“We urge that all necessary measures be taken to ensure justice is served,” the GFA said, adding it is in contact with relevant authorities and the club.

It also revealed that it will be reviewing and strengthening security arrangements for clubs travelling for competitions within Ghana to “prevent such tragic occurrences in the future”.
